Combined Sewer Overflows

Drainage Maps

This is the discharge from a Combined Sewer Overflow half way down Bennett’s Walk. There had been no rain for at least four days. We want to know just how efficient the drainage system for the whole of Morpeth is.

We also want to know when the pumping station in Lower Stanners packed in on 6 September. Was it when NEDL switched off the substation next to it or was it earlier in the day?

We are hoping to get these answers from NWL

1 Church Burn where a culvert cover blew off in West Greens.

2 Bennett’s Walk Combined drainage permanent problems due to lack of capacity and back-flooding to properties.

3 Bennett’s Walk Surface water.

4 Goose Hill Surface water.

5 Combined Overflow permanently running adjacent to Bennett’s Walk.

6 Low Stanners Staithes Lane Combined manhole cover blew off during the storm and suffers leakage and flooding from lack of Combined System capacity.

7 Cotting Burn burst its banks at the top of Staithes Lane and Combined Sewer Overflow discharges frequently close to residential property.

8 Mitford Road apparently suffers from lack of Combined capacity but we don’t presently have detailed information.

9 Middle Greens Allotments ditch and drain blocked but what part this has played in creating problems is not yet determined.

Problems areas we know of

Got a problem with a drain or gully outside your house? We know just that chap to contact, he works for County and is in charge of all the machines that clear the drains.

Terry Garnick, He lives near the Dyke Neuk and would be a bit upset if the upstream storage at Rivergreen Mill was the preferred option since he wouldn’t be able to get out for a drink if there was a severe deluge of rain.

So contact Terry on 01670 533000 if you have a blocked street gully outside your house, DO NOT contact him if the blockage is within the curtilage of your site. If he isn’t there ask for William Harthill.

Photographs

Now that NCC has cleared all the gullies and drains around central Morpeth could you please send us photographs of any problems you have in your street next time it rains.
